About Me

Brendan’s career as a college counselor unintentionally began in college when he helped some friends, and his younger brother, with their college searches. After a brief spell as a journalist, he went back to school to earn his Master’s in Higher Education Administration and began working in the undergraduate admissions office at Northwestern University.

Traveling to visit high schools of all sizes in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah, and working with those students and college counselors convinced Brendan to make the shift to the high school side of the college admissions process. He started that part of his journey working for the Schuler Scholar Program, supporting first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students at a large public high school in the Chicago suburbs.

Brendan then moved to the other end of the high school spectrum, taking on the role of Director of College Counseling at a small, all-girls private high school.

After a decade in college admissions in different roles, Brendan has seen first-hand how challenging and stressful the process can be for students and families when they don’t have individualized support. Because of the large caseloads many school-based college counselors have, they cannot offer that level of support to many of the students. Brendan wants to offer that support to as many students as possible, so they feel confident they are going to the college where they can grow as a student and a person.

Brendan believes the process is most successful when it is values-driven, and his core value of curiosity helps inform his travel to visit different colleges, conversations with others in the admissions world, and, most importantly, his conversations with the students he supports.

When he is not talking with teenagers or thinking about colleges, Brendan is most often traveling with his wife, Maddy; playing with their two dogs (Lily and Belle); playing, watching, and thinking about sports; reading; writing; and tracking severe weather. He is both a Pisces and an ENFP which means he is empathetic, creative, optimistic, and, according to one website, has an “enthusiasm for helping others realize their dreams.” Yep, that’s accurate.

Brendan is an active member of NACAC (National Association of College Admissions Counseling).
